The first rain

The sky turned the colour of an old kadai, all at once, and Aaji called, “Quick, the papad!” Ira ran out to the courtyard, laterite hot under her bare feet, and caught the first drop on her palm before it could catch her. Then another. Then the whole sky let go.

The stone went dark red, drop by drop, faster than Ira could count. Somewhere near the well, a frog answered the thunder. Aaji tucked the papad basket under her arm, laughing, rain already in her hair.

Ira didn’t run inside. Not yet. She wanted to smell the earth wake up.

A proof of concept: one spread from a longer storybook. The Marathi text and the narrator's voice are drafts, waiting for a native speaker's review.
